Media Metrix says Brazil Internet users ballooning SAO PAULO, Sept 13 (Reuters) - The growth in Brazilian Internet users could outpace original estimates, according to a report released Wednesday by U.S.-based Internet research group Media Metrix (NasdaqNM:MMXI - news).
Media Metrix's Brazilian arm said there are about 8.6 million Web surfers in Brazil, which is Latin America's biggest and fastest-growing Internet market.
That estimate would surpass the most recent year-end forecasts made by other research groups. International Data Corp. (IDC) said in a February report that Brazil could end the year with 5.7 million Internet users, although the group said it planned to revise its figures in the Fall.
Web research group Jupiter Communications (NasdaqNM:JPTR - news) most recently estimated there would be 8.4 million people online in Brazil by the end of the year, which includes anyone who has regular access to the Net.
Media Metrix's report was its first attempt to gauge Brazil's burgeoning Internet market. The New York-based group surveyed via telephone potential users in the country's nine leading metropolitan areas and in Sao Paulo state.
The survey showed that 25 percent of people in those areas have a computer at home and 10 percent of people with computers at home own two, Media Metrix said.
Brazilians spend 9.2 days per month on the Internet, while in the United States people spend 11.9 days per month online.
``We are between the United States and Canada,'' Angela Marsiaj, director general of Media Metrix in Brazil, told reporters at a news conference.
Media Metrix listed the country's 25 most accessed sites -- including sites of Universo Online, Spain's Terra Networks and Lycos Inc. (NasdaqNM:LCOS - news) and media group Globo -- although it declined to release numbers for each site until October.
According to IDC, there were only 8.4 million Internet users across Latin America in 1999, a number that the group expects to soar to 29.4 million by 2003.
Media Metrix in June said it would buy rival research firm Jupiter for $414 million |
