You missed my late edit. :)

I'm not in any way downplaying the seriousness of the catastrophe in South East Asia. I'm merely trying to provide some sense of perspective.

I think we can agree that the eventual body count is going to be well over 100,000. Even if herculean efforts prevent disease from overtaking weakened individuals.

The remote villages are going to be devastated due to a lack of infrastructure. Water supplies will be disrupted for months, leading to large outbreaks of GI disease. I've read that dengue fever was already endemic to the area, even prior to this event. And with large concentrations of people, cholera outbreaks are quite likely.

All in all, I'm certainly grateful that I live at 3,500 feet. Though even here in this relatively pristine area we've had two neighborhoods on well systems that have had to curtail the use of tap water recently due to coliform contamination.
