really, the split is immaterial to any possible buyout.

Splitting HP to become better focused is a great thing to do by wallstreet's thinking, and this action has no bearing on the rational for buying another company like wave-x.

as to why they would wait until the price trebled, how would they have known that interest in internet stocks would take the path it has?

Perhaps their ties have grown tighter than they first thought.

Perhaps wave-x is growing more successfull in implementing their business plan than HP thought possible.

Many variables exist that change a large company's vision of what they desire to have, as well as the variables surrounding a wave-x. To suddenly realize a need where one was not realized before is the nature of business.

Personally, I support whatever decision the management makes in this regard.
