That's the one sure fire way to kill Apple once and for all!

My immediate thought also.

Think the same?

Avie Tevanian and Jon Rubinstein?

Again with bureaucrats.

DESIGN is a very elusive thing. CREATIVITY is foggy to most.

Creativity is thought to be sort of magic by people who haven't been intimately involved with creative people. But it's not. It's something that can and has to be learned and nurtured.

Jobs, more than any other CEO I know of, understands creatives.

It's very hard to create an organization of creatives. It's easy to over manage and stifle. It's just as easy to let them go wild (as Jobs learned.) There can be jealousy and people can withhold their best ideas if they think they are not going to be fairly rewarded. Rebels who may not bring forth immediate fruit must be nurtured and tolerated and tamed. Mediocre designers with great sales skills are able to peddle their mediocre designs. Quieter but better designers design gems but can be ignored because the sales designers are LOUDER.

None of the dweebs understand this. Engineers are tough guys and they admire tough guys and don't admire quiet contemplators. In fact engineers routinely put designers down as "artsy types." This is why so much well engineered software is barely usable. It's the old glass room mentality that put Novell where it is today.

My guess though is that, in the power struggle after Jobs leaves, a "tough guy" will emerge and destroy the talent aura that Jobs has created.
