Many big semiconductor companies posted strong growth from a year earlier amid a pickup in outsourcing and a recovery in the global chip industry after a three-year slump, analysts said.

At Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest pure chip foundry, May sales grew 7.2% from April to 5.62 billion New Taiwan dollars (US$172.8 million). However, United Microelectronics Corp., the island's second-biggest chip maker, recorded an 8.9% decline from April as May sales totaled NT$2.26 billion. Analysts said United Micro was hurt by exposure to the volatile market for dynamic random access memory chips.

May sales at Holtek Microelectronics Inc. and Winbond Electronics Corp. also fell from April, "because DRAM prices aren't so good," said Ms. Lee. Taiwan Semiconductor enjoyed growth in May sales partly because it has a relatively small output of DRAM chips, she said.

The recovery in the chip industry has translated into a surge in stock valuations on the local exchange, analysts said. Taiwan Semiconductor's shares have risen 29% since the beginning of May as news of increased orders filtered through the market and as the company took a 30% stake in Acer Inc.'s chip-making unit. The local stock market advanced 8.5% during the same period.
