Repost: *** Taiwan TI-Acer to close 6-inch wafer plant
Story picked up from Infobeat News of 12/22/97. I don't know where the original newspiece may have appeared. Interestingly, they are upgrading this plant to 8" equipment, so it's not entirely bad news only, I guess

TI-Acer Inc, one of Taiwan's leading semiconductor makers, said on Monday it would close its six-inch wafer fabrication plant by the end of this year and sell all the plant's equipment through an open bid. It will release the clean room space for future use and install more advanced eight-inch equipment in the location of the old plant, which situated at the island's northern Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park, TI-Acer said in a statement. TI-Acer will open the bid on January 15, 1998, it said. TI-Acer, a dynamic random access memory chip maker, is a joint venture between Taiwan's computer giant Acer Inc and U.S.-based Texas Instruments.
