Although I am not personally a fan of AOL's service, I think it's pretty clear that they have figured largely in helping the America get on the Net. It's easy for us techheads to pooh pooh their lame interface and their crappy service and whatnot, but take a step back and remember how intimidating this stuff is to neophytes. AOL has been material in greasing the barrier to entry. IMHO.

With respect to their brand name, it's the strongest by far of all the Net access providers. Ask ten people at random off the street if they've heard of AOL. Probably nine affirmatives. Now ask em if they've heard of Netcom. "Who??" Mindspring. "Huh??" Earthlink. "Earthlings??"

Franchise value. You have to really do something BAD to drive users away, as illustrated by your MSN example. Inertia is very strong.
