Only 17% of the undergrad McGill University population actually took part in the vote, a rather low number considering the aggressive “outreach” of the pro-Hamas movement.

72 per cent of that number supports the strike, but overall, just over 12% of the undergrad student body actually supports it. 11% of McGill students “ identify as Muslim,” according to stats dating back to three years ago.

In January 2024, Muslim students at McGill called upon the university to “address Islamophobia on campus” as Israel defended itself against Hamas. Fast forward to November 2024: McGill “ cancelled an on-campus event planned by Jewish students—and temporarily halted bookings for all extracurricular activities.” This was because of “threats of violence along with a death threat” over Mosab Hassan Yousef coming to speak. Yousef is well known as “Son of Hamas” who rejected jihad and Islam. His father, Sheikh Hassan Yousef, was a Hamas founder.

Palestinian Youth Movement Montreal and Students for Palestine’s Honour and Resistance (SPHR McGill) jointly demanded the cancellation of the event on social media, alleging that Yousef advocates for “violence against Palestinians, Arabs, and Muslims.”Pro-Hamas activists are a disruptive nuisance in Canada, as they are everywhere in the West. They are interfering with the right of other students, especially Jewish students, to enjoy the full experience of student life. These rabble-rousers do not belong in the West, and they are not as successful as the media claims them to be. But due to their sheer hooliganism and support for terrorism, they are given lavish coverage. The title alone of the article below is misleading, as it gives the impression of unity among McGill students in the decision to strike.

No “resistance” movement advocating the obliteration of a sovereign state (Israel) should be allowed on any campus, let alone in a society that respects the rule of law.

“McGill students to begin three-day strike over university’s weapons investments linked to Israel,” by Harry North, The Gazette, April 2, 2025:

McGill University students will begin a three-day strike on Wednesday, demanding the university cut ties with weapons manufacturers linked to Israel’s military operations in Gaza.
In an email obtained by The Gazette, the Students’ Society of McGill University (SSMU) told students the strike will run from April 2 to 4. Participation is voluntary, it said, but it urged the university to cancel classes and avoid penalizing students for skipping them.

“While the strike vote does not bind the university, the SSMU calls on the McGill administration to honour the will of the student body, cancel classes and not penalize student absences during this time,” the union wrote.

However, a university spokesperson told The Gazette that classes would not be cancelled.

“All classes, exams, labs and academic activities will proceed as scheduled,” the spokesperson wrote.

They added: “While students have the right to express their views and assemble peacefully, they must ensure that campus access remains unobstructed and academic activities continue without disruption.”

The strike was approved after nearly 4,000 students voted — about 17 per cent of the undergraduate population. Of those, 72 per cent supported the strike, 28 per cent voted against, and the remainder abstained.

Since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, Montreal’s universities have become flashpoints for pro-Palestinian activism. At McGill, the past year has seen regular demonstrations, broken windows during protests and even a pro-Palestinian encampment on campus….
