Despite Bill Gates's "no mea culpa" before the Senate and the press,
Microsoft is quietly backing away from some of the very deals that put it in hot water in the first place.

The software giant is working with ISPs, computer makers, and content
providers to loosen the terms for its Internet Explorer browser and Windows.

Some analysts say Gates is trying to reach a middle ground in order to head off government regulation that might, at worst, split Microsoft into pieces, as with AT&T more than a decade ago. First, Baby Bells -- someday Baby Bills?
