I don't know how it is in your part of the world, but here we can do virtually every aspect of banking via the internet or at an ATM.

We pay anyone via EFT's, we transfer between accounts and banks, we can set up future dated payments and transfers, we obtain or deposit cash at ATM's, etc., etc.
So there are very few reasons to have to visit a physical bank.

I'm sure that must also suit banks because it severely reduces running costs in terms of properties and personnel.
