Interesting story!

I was working for a company in the early 80's and had to do some software installations in Paris for CGEE Alsthom and Electricite de France.

At the time, the French were sufficiently defiant about the natural intrusion of "English-isms" creeping into their language via technology (software, etc) that they established a commission to redefine "American technology terms" in a "French" way. For example, a "bug" (as in a software bug) was to be called something like a "bogue" which is actually some kind of rough seed pod (with sharp points on it )from a tree. And so on. I still have a printout of the list somewhere in my files.

Imagine that! Appointing a commission for this! Not only is that unreasonable, it promotes lack of consistent technical terminology in the world, which would only backfire on the stubborn French because they wouldn't be able to communicate as well as others in the techno-world.
