While Gilder denies an active hand, as I recall, in what the marketing guys do, he still should insist on a few things I think we both can see can be misleading. I will say Gilder uses his reco. price point, not the lowest price of the year(as I think you wrongly suggested), in his letter itself. I also don't think his marketing guys use the method you noted at least(at least!) one letter you were looking at employs, they just take the price at time of reco. before any pop...and note the current price. Not so bad at all, that I can see...except...ahem....there is NEVER enough truth in Stockletter tout sheets. Gilder always says he buys for technology without much if any price consideration of his own, but his "buy the Gilder Letter" tout mailings always entice with potential gains. Well, a helping hand at buying good technologies first, can't hurt, but relying on price pops coming from your own reco. rather than a natural progession of profits from the technology, is about as bad as all the other bad methods employed by various Stockletters(not that his guys have to do this in every case).
Yeah, Mark Hulberts? stuff brings pretty much all the truth to the table...good stuff, IMO.
