Re: It is interesting that we now know that the Soviets did have an expansioist intend,
It's more of a Russian imperial trait than a Soviet Communist trait. By that I mean that the Russian state had been expanding for several centuries before Nitze faced off with Stalin, Mikoyan, Kruschev et al. An interesting historical aside: During the 19th Century, the Russians exceeded the square mileage added to their empire vis a vis the U.S.A. expanding from its Atlantic enclave to control of the entire midlatitudes of the North American continent.
Expansionism is what empires do. :)
*** Re: With this background, what should the US relation with China, the new Russia, and the EU ?
What's your goal? World domination or a decent republic? Do you want to follow the messianic vision of the Project for a New American Century's "Rebuilding America's Defenses", or do you want to savor the vision of a righteous if slightly corrupt republic as envisioned by Senator Robert Byrd?
Clearly, the PNAC/GOP people want it all. They want to run an empire.
Many of us see this as hubris, and as a damn good way to destroy the essence of what made America great.
So, what I want is amicable relationships with trading partners around the globe, a wholesale destruction of the a$$holes who are selling "terror" as a cynical means of enriching themselves, and a cosmopolitan choice of lunch spots.
That doesn't seem to be asking to much, now does it? |
