Hi Eric, How about Goldman Sachs arranging a deal between Novell and Deutsche Telekom? I believe you suggested the possibility in a previous post.

The initial public offering of shares in Deutsche Telekom AG received extensive worldwide attention. Deutsche Telekom is the largest telecommunications operator in Europe and the third largest in the world. At US$13.34 billion, this issue is the largest privatization ever launched in Europe. Goldman Sachs is one of three global coordinators of the offering and is the lead manager in the U.S. Below are some excerpts from the press in Europe, the United States and Asia:

The Wall Street Journal November 15, 1996
"Tidal Wave of Global Telecom Offering Builds: But There Will Be Enough Capital to Fund Flood of Privatizations?"

The initial public offering of Deutsche Telekom will begin trading on Monday. The Deutsche Telekom debut is only the start of a new and staggering round of global telecommunications sell-offs. Spurred by crumbling regulatory barriers, a boom in international business and the pressing need to reduce domestic deficits, governments the world over are scrambling to privatize chunks of their national phone monopolies. Over the next two years, an estimated 60 carriers will try to raise a total of $70 billion on the world equity markets.

"A Hot Topic Among Bankers"
Telecommunications privatizations will keep investment banks busy for years. The Deutsche Telekom privatization is expected to generate the largest fees for investment banks - approximately $200m for Goldman Sachs and the other lead managers. Goldman Sachs has become a leading firm for privatizations, with team members Robert Morris, the firm's telecommunications analysts, Scott Mead, head of the Communications, Media and Technology Group in Europe. Goldman is a prime player in "communicopia" - the convergence of telecommunications, media and computer industries - and is well structured to handle the growing number of Internet deals.
