TranSwitch Corporation Unveils CellBus Architecture Expansion Strategy
Two New Products Herald the Next Phase in Strategy to Extend Leadership in the Broadband Access Market
SHELTON, Conn., Jun 4, 2001 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- TranSwitch Corporation (NASDAQ: TXCC chart, msgs) today unveiled the next phase in extending its leadership position in the broadband access market with the announcement of the AsTriX(TM) and Sertopia(TM) devices.
These devices usher in a new era of scalability and flexibility to existing and new access-based broadband solutions requiring true multi-service functionality such as seamless switching of voice, cell and packet-based data traffic.
Based on a very high-speed and low-power serial backplane technology, which TranSwitch obtained in its acquisition of Alacrity Communications in August 2000, these devices address the near-term requirements of current CellBus(R) customers and provide TranSwitch customers a path to next-generation cost-effective switching technology. This phase allows new and existing ASPEN(R)- and CUBIT(R)-based CellBus (and non-CellBus) customers to scale their current systems up to a 9.6 Gb/s capacity with the use of a single AsTriX switching element. With two AsTriX devices, a 19.2 Gb/s capable system can be realized, far exceeding the needs of most access systems.
Drawing on its extensive expertise in multi-service switching technology, TranSwitch has created AsTriX, the industry's first single chip non-blocking and loss-less multi-port Utopia-based switching solution. With the support of ATM cell and IP/MPLS packet switching, each Utopia level 2 port supports 800 Mb/s bi-directional throughput. The inclusion of the Utopia level 2 interfaces allows the seamless interface of this device with the TranSwitch ASPEN and CUBIT devices, as well as other industry standard Utopia level 2 interface-based products. The AsTriX implements an advanced congestion control mechanism, eliminating any head-of-line blocking, an efficient prioritized traffic access scheme, and supports multicast, unicast and control traffic deliveries.
Sertopia is a high-speed Utopia level 2 transceiver that supports Gigabit data transmission at distances up to 10 meters. The introduction of this innovative device enables the industry's first point-to-point serial backplane and inter-chassis connections via the popular and standardized Utopia level 2 interface. The Sertopia can be configured at transmission speeds ranging from 800 Mb/s to 1 Gb/s, lending flexibility in applications ranging from cell/packet over SONET to Gigabit Ethernet transmission. The Utopia side can be configured as either a Utopia level 2, level 2P or POS-PHY solution. This flexibility allows the device to be used with many industry standard and TranSwitch Utopia-based devices such as ASPEN, CUBIT and the PHAST family of products. With the ability to support up to 32 level 2 PHYs on the Utopia side, the Sertopia can co-exist with other physical layer devices on a common Utopia bus. With internal buffering and a sophisticated backpressure mechanism, the Sertopia device provides per PHY-based flow control that eliminates traffic overflow due to congestion occurring at neighboring devices.
"The introduction of the AsTriX switch and the Sertopia transceiver complements TranSwitch's existing product lines and strengthens its leadership position in the multi-service access market. Along with TranSwitch's CellBus related products, the CUBIT and ASPEN family of devices and the PHAST family of devices, AsTriX and Sertopia have significantly expanded TranSwitch's broad range of high-bandwidth and scalable solutions, allowing customers to build cost-effective, high-performance and high-port density access systems," stated Dr. Hoshang Mulla, Vice President of Marketing for TranSwitch Corporation.
The AsTriX device is packaged in a 31 mm x 31 mm Plastic Ball Grid Array (PBGA) and the Sertopia device is packaged in a 15 mm x 15 mm Plastic Ball Grid Array (PBGA). Sampling of the two devices is planned for the second half of 2001.
