Ausdauer and thread, HP announced the first rewritable 3GB DVD+RW drive. 11 hours of MP3 or thousands of megapixel snapshots on $30 (penny/MB) media with 100MB/minute (11X) write speeds. Opening price: $699 for a SCSI drive (which is sure to fall over time)

Look for this device to eventually replace CD-RW, tape back-ups, and more. HP has turned Iomega's Jazz drive gravy train into road kill. As a PC back-up, you'll be able to make compressed backups at 5 minutes/GB.

You can count me among the first to own one of these wonder toys!

"DVD+RW offers high capacity with fast access time," said Wolfgang Schlichting, research manager, removable storage at IDC. "IDC believes that rewritable DVD technology can become the universal rewritable storage technology for the desktop."
