Yeah it's a dissapointing showing at present !

<Why were we (NOVELL) not included in the list I posted in #5821. With the number of NetWare 4.11 Servers (as you stated "Part of the of IntranetWare package includes a Web server"), I would think Novell would have sold enough product to be listed as one of the top three leaders.>

Right here I go:

1) the info was gathered on DEC 1 96 and it shows that the top 2 Commercial (not Innerweb sites) web sites that answered are still based on Unix machines, NCSA are the the original and Apache is sharware. overall 63% Unix

2) No 3 - 10 all account between 7% and 3% and there is still 15% unaccounted for, So that means that Unix based web servers are still the clear leader and no one Web server is challenging for 3rd.

3) Although Novell had a Web server for v4.1 our INTERNET drive had not really started, and also the early Web server v2.1 was lacking some features. With IntranetWare and Web v2.5 the Market knows we have Web server and that we are touting NetWares' merits as a SupeFast Platform to run a Web server on. We also have just announced Web v3.0
which has some very special features.

Note: Intranetware released on 7th Oct: 54 days before survey.

4) Novell may be in that 15% unaccounted for area.

<Could it be that the market is confused (like me) as to what is defined as a "Web Server"? Or in fact we do head this list but they just forgot to list Novell?>

I suspect the list is genuine, but your right people might be confused as to what a web server is, or more specificly what platform/OS you can run one on !!!

<Given our past sales numbers, where would Novell be on this list (if indeed they counted NetWare 4.11 w/ IntraNetware as a "server" product)? Would we beat the Apache licensed sales number?>

I don't honestly know how to answer that, but given that there is 55 - 60 Million NetWare users I think you could say yes. You must remember it is not the same thing, Server/Web server are different so comparing # is pointless. Say 15,000 IntranetWare copies were sold between 7th Oct & 1st Dec and they all installed and registered their web site,
Novell would have appeared 8th on the list....

It is an interesting survey, and I would like to know Dec 1 1997 result. I would hazzard a guess that Unix Web servers would still be top of the list.. who in 3rd or 4th ????
