> What ever happened to compact and efficient operating systems? Once upon a time the cost of the hardware was orders of magnitude more expensive than the cost of the manpower. Today, the situation is reversed. It is far more efficient for a normal commercial development shop to throw more money at the hardware, or have their customers throw more money at the hardware, than it is to hire more people. But, GNU, Linux and open source software in general throw this balance out of whack. Because we are no longer constantly re-inventing the wheel, OS and application development is much cheaper in terms of development manpower. Ironically, open source will probably also result in continued full employment for software developers for the forseeable future, on a contract or consulting type basis.
