Nope. Oracle has made a large commitment to financial application software. Its mgmt believes that this is where a lot of future growth is going to come from. Oracle has a big consulting business, as well.
Oracle is also a leader in the emerging "network computer" business. It is anyone's guess how big this business will be - or who will be the leaders in it. I think that it is going to be big, and that Oracle will also be big in it.
Oracle is, in general, repositioning itself to be an Internet company. Ellison's vision is that its network computers (diskless wonders) will access oracle databases over high speed access to the internet. I think it is a plausible vision, if not entirely accurate.
If I may lecture ... I see a lot of technical people talk about investing, here on SI and other places. Their superior understanding of the technology blinds them to many business realities. Yes, Oracle is primarily a database company. Yes, Oracle will likely REMAIN a database company, for the near future (except for its financial business). Yes, Oracle has competition, from the likes of SAP and Informix.
However, take a look at Oracle's financials and at its stock chart. Take a look at its management team. This evidence reveals an investor's dream. I believe Oracle's stock price will double every year and a half to two years. This, boys and girls, is the sign of a great stock.
Lecture over. That is my opinion. I have backed my investment truck up to the Oracle stock loading dock, have loaded up, and am waiting patiently. Oracle is, and will continue to be, a star. I rank it with, or at least close to, Intel and Microsoft. |
