I disagree with Kerry on that position. But, I wonder if what he said was taken out of context? Was there more to the quote? Did he follow up with what he thought should be done in instead of the The Varela Project? Perhaps when considered in its entirity, what Kerry actually said wasn't too bad. I'd have to learn more about the Varela Project also.
Also, once Castro is gone, don't expect instant democracy in Cuba. Perhaps another, American friendly, dictator will take over and allow American companies to come in and set up shop, but not grant full civil rights. It certainly wouldn't be the first time the U.S. has supported pro-corporate rightwing dictators who are fine with capitalism, but not fine with granting other basic rights. Guatemala, Brazil, Chile, Iran, etc. |
