Common wisdom see's through the facade. The pastor could burn Beatle records and get a reaction. That is what they did in the early sixties and what was the reaction? It helped to fuel Beatle mania and a lot of the social movement stuff of the sixties had to do with reactions to such oppressive establishment tactics.

The Pastor could burn symbols of sin like drugs, pornography, etc but who would watch? He could burn Mormon, Catholic, or Jewish symbols but he'd get a big yawn. He's not stupid, he is a leader without much of a following so he needs a big reaction and he is getting it. He probably can't see past of the flattering and adoring letters of support he gets. He's out on the proverbial limb. I'm old, so I've been in lots of church groups and heard the talk behind closed doors about how the church across the street has been tainted by the devil. This Pastor is threatened by Islam setting up across the street, the ultimate, and so are a lot of people rightfully or wrongfully and he is a true believer that he stands before God and against the devil in what he is doing, he's also caught up in the fame thang. I think he is full of shit, no differently than the worst terrorists who justify their actions the same way. Same story different robe.
