Punko:

The most important word in your post, which you use quite a number of times, & undoubtedly hang your hat on, is the word "if." "If" is a word often used by dreamers, not an investor.

"If" alone is a useless way of analyzing possibilities unless the analysis also considers the "likelihood" upon which realization of any outcome need be based.

The most improbable of all your "ifs" is that "Microsoft is left alone by the government." The likelihood of this happening is close to nil.

Technology has thoroughly permeated today's society. Consequently, it is clear to the tech & non-tech alike, that MSFT has exerted its monopoly of PC operating system to eliminate competition in other areas of its business & leave consumers with virtually no choice in what otherwise should be a free & open market.

MSFT will learn to compete on another level. It will be successful, because it is an excellent company. But I think the ease with which it has been able to seize the opportunities of its competition will vanish.
