SMITHERS, B.C. - A power transmission line in northern B.C. could help create thousands of jobs and attract billions in investment, the group pushing for the development of the Northwest power line said Wednesday.

The Northwest Power Line Coalition said preliminary findings of a report commissioned by the group suggested that providing electric power along Highway 37 has the potential to attract $3.5 billion in capital to bring eight mining projects to production.

The investments have the potential to create 2,000 jobs, generate over $300 million in annual revenues, and provide more than $75 million in annual taxes to government, the group said.

The final report by the Macquarie Group is expected later this year.

The estimates do not include the proposed Galore Creek mine that was put on hold last year.

The power line project, that would see a transmission line run from the Skeena sub-station near Terrace north to Bob Quinn Lake, was killed last November after Teck Cominco (TSX: TCK-B.TO) and NovaGold Resources (TSX: NG.TO) put Galore Creek on hold amid soaring costs.

The two companies had committed $150 million toward the $400 million transmission line in order to power their new gold, silver and copper mine.
