Tim, it's silly for Krugman to say that "demand" is the problem.

If I opened up a store that sold ice cubes to polar bears and it's not doing as well as I had hoped, does that mean that my problem is "demand"? And if so, does that mean government ought to buy up my ice cubes?

Or maybe a real-world example would do. I just visited a furniture store that is having a clearance. The store is going out-of-business and needs to liquidate its inventory. Only problem is that most of its furniture sucks.

Maybe Krugman can argue that the store's problem is "demand," and that government ought to step in and buy up said furniture. Because letting the free market determine who succeeds and who fails is just too cruel.
