In 1969, he was offered the script of "M*A*S*H", a zany and biting Korean war spoof, after 15 other filmmakers passed it up. The hit film that resulted proved a witty yet outspoken critique of the US role in the Vietnam War that was raging at the time.

It won Altman his first best director Oscar nod, spawned a long-running US television series and made Altman a serious player in the movie industry.

nominated 5 times, he never won

it's not easy being a maverick

but it's why I liked him
