Half of all police budgets pay to enforce drug laws. Imagine doubling the budget, nationwide, to fight violent crime. Presumably some of the spending has a double benefit (locking away violent criminals on drug charges), and presumably with less work to for the police/courts/prisons, some of the spending (or at least some of the future growth in spending) will be eliminated. Do doubling the resources might not be accurate. But you can get more resources devoted to these crimes, while at the same time lowering government expenses.
