China firm launches country's first WAP
system

(27 June 2000) A Chinese company recently announced it
has succeeded in developing the country?s first wireless
application protocol (WAP) mobile phone system. This feat
made the Beijing Guoyan Telecommunications Technology
Co. the first domestic telecom company to gain intellectual
property rights for a WAP system.

Beijing Guoyan Telecom developed its WAP technology in
cooperation with the national laboratory located at the Beijing
University of Posts and Telecommunications, the June 24
June Jisuanji Shijie Ribao (China Computerworld) reported.

During the press conference at which Beijing Guoyan
Telecom announced its new WAP system, the company
demonstrated various wireless Internet application services
such as its Mobile Office, Mobile Phone Stock Market, News
and Reports, and Weather Forecast services.

Beijing Guoyan Telecom is optimistic about its new WAP
technology, even though foreign companies such as
Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola earlier developed WAP
systems and applications. This is because the foreign
companies? products and applications face in China the
challenges of localization, personalization, the Chinese
language and differences in user habits, the publication
noted.
