My knife catching method is to initiate a small position at a price that I consider pretty rock bottom (e.g. what I had for CHGG today). Then, unless something major has changed with the outlook, I will place geometrically or arithmetically increasing orders for every 10% - 20% drop in the price. The idea is that my average cost is always within 20% of the recent low. At some point in time the stock has to move up (this is assuming it is not going belly up - which is a primary condition for fighting the tape).

In the case of NU, I have geometrically increasing orders for every 20% drop. Ditto for XBI and few others.
