Yes the physical person projects a mask to the physical world. The mask is a REAL component of a REAL person. To the extent that a person might be successful in projecting that persona unto a bulletin board...it is no less REAL than it would be in a law office.

Having a duplicitous character and being capable as an actor are not synonymous with having a public face which we all show to the world. If you were to say that some people on SI might be showing a different character than they show at their PTA, then who has ever disputed that people may show different aspects of themselves in different sets and settings?

In general, I find it much easier to assess people on SI for several reasons: They use less subterfuge in general because anonymity allows them to express authentic thoughts and feelings without risking social and business comebacks. They expose a far greater volume of thoughts and feelings than we normally receive over years and years of contact with others. Their posts are preserved for comparison as to consistency of expression, of personality, and of character. Telephone calls, letters, pictures, dinner meetings, etc. simply augment and consolidate all of this massive evidence.

This sharing of uncensored expression is frightening to sensitive people. They tend to cover their eyes and scream: "None of this is REAL!"

"We generally avoid certain taboo topics in face to face because they are so volatile and inform people at such deep levels, and we pull our punches to avoid being censored in the community. When people are censored here they tend to minimize it and retreat to positions such as "it doesn't matter." These are natural human defence mechanisms.
