Attention Business Editors:
COM DEV secures Hughes contracts with long-term purchase agreement
CAMBRIDGE, ON, May 31 /CNW/ - COM DEV International Ltd. (TSE/ME:CDV) today announced the extension of an existing long-term purchase agreement between its Space Group and Hughes Space and Communications Company to provide microwave equipment for use in commercial communications satellites. Under the renewed three-year agreement, the Space Group will supply Hughes with standard C- and Ku-band input multiplexers. COM DEV is able to reduce product delivery time significantly with a long-term agreement in place. The first two contracts under the new agreement are to supply 48 C-band input multiplexer filters, scheduled to ship in the summer of 1999. COM DEV has supplied custom-designed multiplexers to Hughes for more than 20 years. The satellite's input multiplexer takes the broadband signal received from the ground and separates it for enhancement. The output multiplexer recombines the signal to be beamed back to the ground. COM DEV is the largest independent manufacturer of multiplexers and filters for commercial space applications in the world. Hughes Space and Communications Company, a unit of Hughes Electronics, is the world's leading manufacturer of commercial communications satellites, and is also a major supplier of spacecraft and equipment to the United States government. COM DEV International Ltd., a member of the TSE 300 (TSE/ME:CDV), is a leading manufacturer of space and ground-based wireless communications products and subsystems, and consists of three operating units: the Space Group, the Wireless Group, and Wireless Systems. The Space Group manufactures advanced products that are sold to the major satellite prime contractors for use in commercial communications satellites. The Wireless Group manufactures ground-based infrastructure subsystems used in microwave and radio frequency systems, such as GSM and CDMA-based digital telephone systems, and wireless local loop networks. These products are sold primarily to major PCS wireless equipment vendors. Wireless Systems manufactures radio-based wireless communications products. These products range from high power base stations and cell extenders to indoor distributed repeater systems, all of which are used by service providers. COM DEV is a Canadian-based technology company and employs more than 1,300 people in facilities in Ontario, New Brunswick, the United States, the United Kingdom and China.
