WM- 'Consumer Reports' did a study a couple of years ago comparing various brands of oil, regular and synthetic. They used new taxi cabs as the test vehicles, and tore down the engines after 50k miles and measured wear on major mechanical parts. They found NO difference between brands of oil. Synthetics were no better than the others in terms of wear. I buy my oil by price and the 'S' specification. Any SJ oil is identical to the rest. I use whatever is on sale at Autozone. I change the oil and filter every 7500 miles, and have never had any engine problems in any vehicle. I used Slick50 once in a Nissan Pick-up. It increased my gas mileage by 5-10% for a while, but I doubt it really helped on wear. I'm not sure about changing only the filter. That would remove most of the solids, but the oil will still lose it's viscosity over time I bet. Maybe it's not enough to harm the engine for a long time, so you could possibly get away with it for many years. Perhaps a chemist could tell us more?
