As to your other point: language 'evolves' (meanings change, new words come into use if they are perceived as useful, old ones drop from use, etc.) and the exact same mathematics that may be used to plot biological evolutionary changes may be used to explore linguistic evolution.

I contend that --- whatever the linguistic antecedents of the two words --- the common use of 'atheist' and 'agnostic' express a valid and important distinction.
