Frank -

AMD corporate management IS Jerry Sanders, founder, CEO and I think Chairman of the board.

Jerry has an EGO somewhat larger than Jupiter.

Sanders was a Fairchild salesman (presumably their best) when he quit to start AMD in 1969. Prior to that, he was a contemporary of the Intel Troika (Bob Noyce, Gordon Moore, Andy Grove) which left Fairchild the previous year (1968) to start Intel.

Apparently, he fashions himself as capable and brilliant as the Intel folks - so he must believe he and his company can go head to head with Intel on a techniology and manufacturing basis.

I'm certain that the legal disputes between AMD and Intel, over the x86 license and patents and technology exchange that consumed AMD and Intel for many years during the late 80s and early 90s, have heightened his anger and jealousy of the microprocessor behemoth.

So, Jerry looks like he is going to the wall with his CPU/x86 strategy whether logic or common sense dictate otherwise.

EGO is an important thing. Unabashed EGO is a dangerous thing.
