Yeah, right. Choices. Shmoices. Just look at how the average Joe did when he had choices in his 401k accounts. Even in the secular bull of 1982-2000, when the markets rose 17%, the average Joe made a pathetic return -- something like 5 or 6 percent. Why? Choices!

And now we are in a secular bear-market with markets fiercely reverting to the mean. An optimistic return for the next 15-20 years from 2000 would be about 5 percent. Give the average Joe some choices and with some help from the friendly Wall Street broker, he will end up with a negative return!

Yeah, the "ownership society" -- didn't Lincoln abolish it when he issued the Emancipation Proclamation?
