Don, I think you are right. But there was a fairly common factor until well into the 20th century, which was that there were swarms of young males who couldn't have land in their own countries due to too many people. What they heck do you do with hordes of stroppy young guys? Well, you put them in uniform, tell them over yonder hills are the promised land and they just need to put to the sword anyone they find over there and they can expand the fatherland, motherland and King's Empire and get a piece of the action.

Fortunately, those days have gone and there is room for everyone in the modern market economies. Even better, the population mayhem is ending [in a lot of countries anyway].

Human life didn't involve a lot of value 200 years ago [for the most part]. The opportunity cost of a young guy speared wasn't too bad at all and in some respects, it was desirable, especially if new lands could be taken over to form part of the empire.
