DSHEA appears only to forbid such claims ON THE PRODUCT LABEL. vm.cfsan.fda.gov

DSHEA is all a word game unto itself. Take a look at the following from the promotional literature by NuNaturals for its Stevia Product:

"ZERO CALORIES...Stevia Is The Best Alternative To That Nutra Stuff. These Stevia Extracts virtually eliminate some of the strong flavors which the unextracted powdered leaf or crude extracts have. This creates a superior product THAT WILL NOT OVERPOWER THE BEVERAGES OR FOODS THAT YOU ADD STEVIA TO WHEN USED AS A DIETARY SUPPLEMENT. You will love using NuNaturals Stevia extracts and find them to be the most concentratyed AND BEST TASTING products on the market..." Then it lists the three forms of the product: Pure Liquid - "Great for teas"; Pure Extract - "excellent for mixing up large batches of beverages or for recipes." Extract Powder - "This form is perfect for sprinkling on cereal, yogurt, as well as mixing in beverages."

NuNaturals is a sizeable company and has been selling Stevia for a long time through major national retailers. FDA not shut them down. FDA know it on weak footing with sordid history of Aspartame approval. Politically not feasible for FDA to make big deal about alternative natural sweeteners being sold as dietary supplements. Everyone know why people buy Stevia. As long as Taste of Nature label not say it is a sweetener, it be OK. (Taste of Nature web wage does not call it a sweetener - merely alludes to and implies that it is.).

hawkeye has no desire to engage in the ongoing AZNT-thread battle. however, hawkeye humbly suggest that critics of AZNT barking up wrong tree in attacking AZNT on basis FDA regulation and the validity of rainforest botanicals.
