It somewhat depended on the tribes, but for the most part we never had much peaceful coexistence with the native Americans. Their lands were taken and fenced and farmed by Europeans. It is pretty easy to see why things got tense. And stayed tense. Until the Europeans owned all the "good" arable land. memorialhall.mass.edu
