KANATA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 12, 1998--Newbridge (TSE:NNC.) (NYSE:NN) Newbridge Solution Enables Delivery of High-Quality, Competitive Healthcare Services.
Newbridge Networks today announced that it has been selected to install the high-performance Newbridge(R) VIVID(TM) Switched Routing system at St. Paul's Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia. The networking solution will enable St. Paul's to provide high-quality, competitive healthcare services to the six other healthcare facilities that comprise the Providence Health Care consortium and the thousands of individuals it serves.
By seamlessly linking Providence Health Care's communications facilities into a single entity, the network enables physicians and other healthcare workers located in various facilities to instantaneously access and share a wide range of information, including detailed electronic medical records, regardless of the time of day. Other applications made possible by the Newbridge solution include: telemedicine; on-line training of healthcare personnel; the conversion of lab manuals and other documentation into web pages for healthcare employees; and convenient, "transportable" patient records, which eliminate the need for individuals to complete new forms each time they visit a different facility.
St. Paul's selected Newbridge Networks to provide the switched routing solution because of the Company's knowledge and understanding of the changing healthcare environment and its implications on internetworking requirements. As more and more hospitals merge to form consortiums, there is an ongoing need to provide a cost-effective, fully managed networking solution that will enable information to be shared and exchanged between multiple sites quickly and reliably. The Newbridge solution delivers high performance ubiquitous network services that are locationally independent and "application-proof."
"As the needs of our network continued to grow and change at a phenomenal rate, we began to experience difficulties handling traffic and managing our network, which was being taxed to the limit," said Dr. Barry Wiggs, Technical Infrastructure, St. Paul's Hospital. "With more than 7,500 employees, Providence Healthcare needed a fast, reliable network that is simple to administer and can be managed from a single point. We needed to manage and deliver useful network services to our end users and not just offer connectivity. The Newbridge solution met all of our needs. Within a matter of hours, the network was up-and-running for us to test and use. Now that's plug-and-play technology!"
The VIVID switched routing solution being installed at St. Paul's Hospital consists of CS3000 ATM switches at the network core, Orange Ridge(TM) and Yellow Ridge(TM) edge devices, Route Servers, and a System Manager. The entire solution functions as a single network-wide Layer 3 switch.
With dual route servers to provide redundancy, the Newbridge MultiProtocol-Over-ATM (MPOA)-based switched routing network will enable the delivery of multiple traffic types (e.g., voice, video and data) to each of the healthcare consortium members without the delays inherent in a traditional router-based solution.
"We are pleased that we have been able to develop a networking solution that will enable the people who are served by the Providence Health Care consortium to benefit from superior quality, competitive healthcare services," said Stu Aaron, Assistant Vice President, Enterprise Marketing, Newbridge Networks. "The flexibility and scalability of the network will ensure St. Paul's is well positioned to meet demand for even higher bandwidth applications, such as digital x-rays and cardiac imaging well into the future."
