Off The Shelf

AMD is scheduled on Nov. 1 to cut the pricing on its K6
166MHz chips to keep them at roughly 25 percent below Intel's
MMX lineup. The problem, said one system OEM, is that as
pricing approaches the $100 and below level, the $25 difference
between K6 and Intel's MMX chips becomes considerably less
meaningful. According to the source, the K6 166MHz will be
reduced to $82 from a current $109; the K6 200MHz will be
reduced to $150 from a current $189; and the K6 233MHz will
be reduced to $215 from a current $284, according to a source.
Pricing is in 1,000-unit quantities. AMD declined to comment on
unannounced pricing at press time.

Sources at rival companies say 3Com/U.S. Robotics has stopped
using the term "x2" in its ads.
They hint this is a possible
conciliation by the company to the confusion created by two
different designs. 3Com vice president of marketing Neil
Clemmons, however, said the reports are untrue.
The Leap
Partnership, the Chicago-based company responsible for the x2
campaign, did not return calls.
