It's amazing all the different interpretations people have about that relatively simple sentence. It reminds me of what students can do with a poem when asked "what does this mean?" Lots of creativity and projection. Choose the word gun or immigrant or religion and noodle on all the things he may have meant. When I read it, it just seemed an awkwardly stated comment about how people take their freefloating anxiety and stress and find a more accessible concrete issue on which to focus. It's so much easier to say, illegals are taking jobs, or my guns will go over my dead body. These are things you think you KNOW about, you can grasp them. Economics gets pretty fuzzy, and the "govt" is pretty nebulous- and longterm. I didn't get anything like what Sullivan did from that religious comment. IMO, he riffed on his own thoughts, as did I- and everyone else, apparently. So it seems to have been an unfortunately phrased statement that left a variety of interpretations available for abuse. The whole thing is such a crock. On this kind of crap, we are supposed to choose or reject a candidate? WILL THIS EVER END??????
