The relevance is to something you contested about retirees living in and moving to those states. Those are attractive states to retirees. And lots of retirees mean federal SS (welfare to you) dollars going to those states.

By your definition florida should be way ahead and is instead at even money. Also, I can assure you that a state like arkansas is not a top retirement destination, yet receives a disproportionate ratio of $$ back. The real explanation is that these states have a poor wage/economic base. CT for instance is no2 in taxes paid per capita and 3rd from the bottom in dollars received back....MS by contrast is no50 in taxes paid per capita and second from top in moneys received in return. If the fed stopped collecting and "redistributing" tax dollars these states would be in deep shit.

Incidentally, as a conservative you should be appalled at this uneven flow of oh so hated federal taxes ...particularly if, as you claim, these are social security $$...strange socialism bed-fellowship wouldn't you say?

PS: California is consistently 5th on the most recent surveys of popular places to retire.
