Quicksand was prominent in movies of that era.

Yes, they were great scenes. The bad guy would run out on quicksand, and would be sucked down screaming (coward!) and flailing. His eyes would disappear and only his hat or helmet would be left floating. Boy did he deserve it.

From what I've I've read, since quicksand is only thick water, if you just relax and lay on your back, you can gently paddle yourself back to firm ground.

The bad guys were always too stupid to know that.
