I'm going with an asteroid impact for the GT-event. Lots of correlation between conditions described in many Nosty quatrains and current scientific estimates about what effects a large asteroid impact would have upon the planet.

He did say people would argue about it right up to the day the "mountain round" plunges into the sea.
