Last night I watched "2001, A Space Odyssey", a film made in 1968. In it, Stanley Kubrick supposed that by 2001, 33 years, we'd have a permanent large space station, a permanent moon base, regular traffic from the Earth to both of them. We also had the ability to make a manned mission to Jupiter without a lot of bother. In 1968, it seemed like a perfectly reasonable projection - the very next year we landed on the moon!

What the f*ck happened to us? We're the Vikings of space travel!
