I like the big upper deck of your grandma's house, and all the windows.
Our house was very modest, not architect designed, in a zone that had been declared a Landmark District - they called it Bungalow Heaven bungalowheaven.org. The best thing was that all the walls in the living room were wood-panelled. All the wood had been painted, and we spent months stripping it and restoring the glow of the wood (and probably poisoning ourselves). The floors were Oregon pine as well, not ideal flooring because it isn't very hard, but good-looking. The exterior was clad with cedar shingles, the roof with the typical California asphalt shingles. A charming little house, which unfortunately we sold at a low in the market (to move to NZ). It's probably now worth 3x what we sold it for in 1995.
