Eventually it might come to that, though I doubt it anytime soon. There are too many already in the system. These recipients require current weekly payroll tax to keep the funds flowing. Remember there is no SS account per se, it's money in, money out. In addition there will always be the "grasshoppers" in our society who will depend on largess from the "ants" That's a broad simplification I know and does not mention those unable to work and contribute, etc..

Under the current system with 2-3 workers providing funds for each recipient, it's nightmarish to think what might happen were this country to enter into a 1929 era depression. If unemployment reached the levels of those times there simply would not be sufficient revenue to pay claims, not to mention unemployment benefits. The US would have no choice but to take on monstrous deficit budgets to cover the short fall.

I know, it can't happen? But it sure makes an argument for change.
