You've just provided another good example of Republican pessimism.

Actually, the best example of that has been the extraordinary--and profoundly antidemocratic--quote from 1787 by Scotsman Alexander Tyler, posted by JDN in Message 19892462. That citation has gotten me reading a number of different sources on the debates that took place during the American revolution, which weren't pretty. (JDN I am not accusing you of being antidemocratic, except in the Republican sense<GG>. I know you are not because you fought to defend American democracy.)

Regardless of whether you agree with its content, which I certainly don't, that quote and the sentiment surrounding it is the essence of a lot of the Rush Limbaugh demagoguery that we've seen repeated here and that we hear repeated every day; understanding it is IMHO vital to understanding the contemporary U.S. political scene. I'm grateful to JDN for posting it.
