Has Intel spannered AMD Fujitsu deal?

What's happened to the big Opteron blade box

By Mike Magee in New York City: Wednesday 23 April 2003, 14:24
IT WAS A LITTLE curious to see Fujitsu-Siemens announce just a high end workstation for the Opteron chip, given the size of the great big box we saw earlier this year at the CeBIT show in Hannover, Germany.

If you turn to our picture page from CeBIT, here,(http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=8274) here, you'll see a picture of a big, very big Fujitsu Opteron system with blades.

This was positioned at the front of the AMD stand in a very prominent position and drew a lot of people.

There wasn't a mention of it yesterday, however.

Now something has happened since CeBIT. Intel persuaded Fujitsu to drop its big systems using the SPARC chips, and commit to converting its entire user base over to the Itanium and all its works and trumps over a period of some years.

So we wonder whether this move has in any way affected the plans Fujitsu obviously had for these big boxes. Or could it be that Fujitsu-Siemens just forgot to tell us its plans for the big Opteron baby were still right on track.

Will Fujitsu drop their big system using the SPARC chip in favor of Itanium ...? I thought Fujitsu was a Sunw partner?
