Maybe a lot of people can't and that's why he's never done much since mash. Actually Alda has been hugely successful in films behind the scenes apparently, which usually is considered a step up in Hollywood from television. Of course Mash was so big its hard to say in this case... but Alda had roles in "Murder at 1600","Crimes and Misdemeanors","Flirting with Disaster", etc. I guess films are a better deal for Hollywood types because they obtain equity in the project, whereas in television its just a salary. Another guy who is rising is Harvey Keitel, apparently became very powerful through relationships with up and coming directors like Quentin Tarantino.
