D. Floyd - It is a well known fact that the market screams in presidential election years. (There is also supposed to be some sort of Super Bowl indicator which apparently bodes favorably since the NFC won - but I digress.) What is also interesting is that in the vast majority of instances, when a Republican is elected, interests rates rise, an economic downturn is induced, and the economy then recovers in time for the reelection campaign. On the other hand, Democrats like to stimulate the economy through their (foolish) social welfare programs. The economy stays hot during the first few years of a Democratic term but then inevitably cools, making it difficult for the Democrat to be reelected. I saw the graphs many years ago in the Stock Traders Almanac.

George Bush Sr's great mistake was not slamming on the breaks hard early in his term after the many years of Reagan's tax cut induced, monster deficit, hyper stimulated economy. He did the right thing by "staying the course,"
he simply just started too late. All the hard unpleasantness having been done, Slick Willie got a lean, mean, efficient economy handed to him. The big question now for Al Gore is whether it is not time to pay the piper again. My bet says that it is, and that Al will have to do some very slick maneuvering around gasoline prices.
